The Director's Cut

When the moon is full, an ancient wolf turns into a savage, bloodthirsty man,
killing anybody who rings the doorbell and trying desperately to not eat his new girlfriend.

“A bloody good, good-and-bloody love story… One of the most original werewolf tales in ages.”
– Oakland Tribune

The Audie Backstory

Two key things happened in late 2006 that got the ball rolling on Audie & The Wolf, which was my third feature film as writer-director:

(1) a producer who I’d worked with said he wanted to do a “bottle movie” (a one-location film) that he could shoot in his girlfriend’s huge Hollywood mansion, and…

(2) Frank Kowal (Slangman from Bleak Future and my film cohort since high school) posed the question over beers at the Red Lion Inn in Glendale: What is the natural state of a werewolf? Is it man or is it wolf?

I cleared it with Frank to run with that hook, then completed the first draft of Audie & The Wolf about a week later. And that producer liked it. After a few more super quick drafts, we were suddenly in pre-production, slated to shoot for 18 days.

And yeah, I knew the draft wasn’t stellar but hey, I’d polish it and it would be a quickie and maybe make a few foreign sales and I could buy litter for my two cats.

But then ka-bam! We had a start date and things started moving super fast. First, we got the ridiculously talented Derek Hughes aboard to play the wolf/man John Doe, then shortly after, we attached a famous actress to play the role of Audie. Suddenly doors started to open and gear and services started rolling in.

So meaningful script rewrites fell by the wayside as I got more and more involved in the preproduction. (I, too, was a producer).

And then about a week before our start date, things started getting dicey. First, the 1st assistant director suddenly vanished from the Earth, leaving me scrambling to find a replacement who understood the huge lift we were about to attempt.

Then Famous Actress and her people started ignoring our producers’ phone calls. (We got the distinct feeling she was holding off until the last minute so she could field another more lucrative offer but others say she was bowhunting in the Andes.)

But alas day one quickly came. And lo, forty full gallons of flop sweat was harvested from our armpits and sold to Trader Joes to make their signature wine while we wondered if Famous Actress would show up.

Well, she finally did. But, we ended up losing most of the day because she holed up in her dressing room and had some worry time about “not being prepared.” We eventually assuaged her concerns by assuring her none of us assholes were prepared either and we got her to set and yeah, she was great because she’s Famous Actress. But then for some strange reason, she started getting spicy with our makeup person and that set the day back even further as we had to stop them from killing each other with knives. There were no knives.

And then ka-bam! Just like that we were behind an entire production day, and we absolutely couldn’t afford to lose another.

Story short, after more flop sweat and much arguing, we bit the bullet and had to ask Famous Actress to not come back the next day. God dammit, I tell you that was a bummer and hard choice we had to make but we just had to do it. (God dammit! I could’ve had Famous Actress in my god damn film, god dammit!)

But thankfully the talented actor and filmmaker Tara Price was available to take her place. And Price was, of course, great too.

And yeah, there were lots of other little hiccups (and a couple major ones) throughout the shoot, but bottom line: 18 shooting days later the film was in the can and I started cutting.

And post? That’s where it all melted down and I had to just walk away at a certain point in the process. I’ll detail all of that someday in a very violent, very bloody graphic novel.

But it wasn’t all apeshit and exploding gonads. I had a lot of fun shooting the goddamn thing, and despite the creative fisticuffs that came in post, everybody came together on set to make the shit happen and nobody lost an eye except Sandy Duncan.

Audie premiered at the Downtown LA Film Festival in 2008 and played a few others, and I believe the movie did decently in Germany and Russia, and maybe under the sea where the seahorses live.

Fast forward to now and there are TWO versions of the film:

1) The original cut, which is the DVD and also out there in all sorts of weird places like ad-driven streaming channels and shit.

and

2) The Director’s Cut here on my website and on Amazon Video. The Director’s Cut, while still a flawed film, has quicker pacing, better use of music, stronger character moments, clearer story points (though some story points are beyond saving), and the zombies, while still not perfect, look a smidge more like zombies.

So, surprise! I recommend watching the Director’s Cut.

Thanks for stopping by!
